Puzzle Week: Another brain teaser

NPR Weekend Edition Sunday puzzlemaster and FOBB&B Will Shortz tells me he can't use this one on the radio because the wordplay is already familiar to him, so I'll post it here instead. (Not the first time I thought I'd come up with something original but the world beat me to it.)

Hail to the Chief

Take the last name of a U.S. president and remove one letter. The remaining letters, read in reverse order, spell a word that describes the president. Who is it?
