As you may know, the New York Times crossword puzzle gets progressively more challenging with each day of the week: Monday is easiest, Saturday is hardest, and the larger Sunday puzzle with its wider audience has easy, medium and difficult clues so there's something for everyone (it averages about a Thursday-ish difficulty level).
In this video clip from the Boston Crossword Puzzle Tournament held at Harvard University on April 5, 2009, NYT puzzle editor Will Shortz explains how he decides the appropriate print day for each puzzle he chooses to publish from among the 75 to 100 submissions he receives each week. He also describes his team's quality control process and the last crossword tournament he entered.
