I've been waiting since 1996 for someone to point out to Alanis that a black fly in your Chardonnay is not irony.
As for the aerophobic, the irony was that he was getting to like the plane flight just as the crashing start. "He thought, 'Well, isn't this nice.'"
That's funny, I always figured that the aerophobic's "isn't this nice" reaction was not one of enjoyment, but more "Well this is a fine how-do-you-do."
Also, I'm not sure I buy that he would start enjoying air travel for the first time "as the plane crashed down."
