Apple to Shut Down Lala.com
[WSJ]

This, of course, begs a question.  Apple had something called Lala.com?

Until this announcement a couple weeks ago, I had no idea that Apple owned Lala. It's disappointing that they're shuttering it because it was a fantastic resource. Not just as a means to discover new music but as a research tool: I was editing some articles at work about Caribbean music subgenres, and it was awesome to be able to log in to Lala and immediately listen to the works being referenced. It'll be interesting to see what sites like Billboard and Pitchfork, who have incorporated built-in Lala players as an integral part of their interface, do to fill the void. I don't know of many other sites like it in the U.S.
